Tattoo Aftercare: How To Heal Your Tattoo
Proper tattoo aftercare is not just a routine; it's a commitment to healing your tattoo properly and safely. Learn how to properly take care of your new tattoo from the beginning of the healing process to the end with the tattoo aftercare tips and advice.
The First 24 Hours: Handle with Care
Leave the Bandage On: Your tattoo artist will cover your fresh ink with a protective bandage or wrap. Keep it on for the first few hours to shield your tattoo from dirt and bacteria. This initial covering creates a barrier against external elements and promotes optimal healing.
Cleanse Gently: After the designated time, carefully remove the bandage and cleanse the tattooed area with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. Pat it dry with a clean, soft paper towel. Avoid abrasive materials and be gentle to prevent irritation.
Days 1-2: Moisturize and Protect
Apply an Approved Ointment or Lotion: Your tattoo artist will recommend a specific ointment or lotion. Apply a thin layer to keep the tattoo moisturized and aid the healing process. Over-application can hinder healing, so a little goes a long way.
Avoid Sun Exposure: Shield your fresh tattoo from direct sunlight. UV rays can fade colors and slow down the healing process. If sun exposure is unavoidable, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your ink.
Days 3-14: Nourish and Resist Temptation
Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration promotes skin health and aids in the healing process. Drink plenty of water to ensure your skin stays nourished from the inside out.
Resist the Itch: As your tattoo heals, it's normal for it to itch. However, refrain from scratching or picking at the scabs. Scratching can damage the healing skin and compromise the vibrancy of your tattoo.
